The seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings is a critical concern, especially for structures designed prior to the implementation of modern seismic design provisions. This paper presents the Japanese JBDPA Standard (2001) as a comprehensive framework for the seismic assessment of existing RC buildings. The methodology employs a three-level screening procedure to calculate the Seismic Index of Structure, which is subsequently compared with the required Seismic Demand Index to evaluate structural safety. The assessment incorporates member strength, ductility, structural irregularities, and time-related deterioration effects. Particular attention is given to the calculation of the principal evaluation indices and the criteria used for seismic safety judgment.
