This paper presents two building projects in seismic regions: Project A (Italy) and Project B (Middle East). It examines challenges in aligning architectural intent, client expectations, regulations, and seismic performance throughout design. Project A, designed to Italian NTC18, adopted an elastic design approach due to architectural constraints limiting ductility, requiring strict control of force demand and material behavior. Project B, a high-importance, geometrically irregular nine-building complex, required post-earthquake operability. Seismic isolation proposed at concept stage was rejected, leading to a conventional solution with limited ductility and a predominantly elastic composite system (steel encased in concrete). The paper highlights how constraints, risk perception, and interdisciplinary coordination shape seismic design strategies.
