This paper investigates the effect of a haunch on the ultimate capacity and lateral stiffness of a single-bay, two-hinged, unbraced steel frame subjected to gravity loading and a concentrated lateral force. For the frame without haunches, analytical and numerical analyses were carried out using beam and shell finite elements, whereas the identical frame with haunches was analysed numerically using shell elements in the Abaqus software package. The dimensions and shape of the haunch were varied within a parametric analysis, considering three characteristic shapes. The results show that the presence of haunches significantly increases the ultimate capacity and stiffness of the system and affects the development of plasticity and the location of plastic hinges. Both parameters influence the frame response, although the haunch dimensions have a more pronounced effect than the haunch shape.
