Abstract

This paper presents the design of a reinforced concrete arch bridge over the Đetinja River canyon, part of the Užice bypass route in Serbia. The 292 m long structure features a main arch span of 162 m with a rise of 23,6 m (rise-to-span ratio 1/6,86), placing the deck approximately 90 m above river level. The rationale for selecting a relatively shallow arch, thrust line optimization by iterative polygon-of-forces construction, and the structural behaviour under permanent, variable, thermal, and seismic actions are discussed. Variable arch cross-section dimensions and their structural and aesthetic roles are explained. Particular attention is given to concrete Freyssinet hinges used at the short pendel piers. The cantilever construction method with temporary towers and cable stays is outlined.
