Abstract

This study presents a probabilistic assessment of an existing four-span reinforced concrete slab bridge, considering the stochastic variations of concrete strength and the yield strength of reinforcement steel. Although Eurocode permits probabilistic assessment of existing bridges, it provides limited practical guidance. Bending and shear limit-state functions are formulated using experimental material data to define probabilistic distributions. Other parameters remain deterministic or taken from literature. Results are also compared with traditional calculation using partial coefficients. Reliability is evaluated by estimating failure probability and safety margins for governing Ultimate Limit States (ULS). The performed calculation enables a more realistic assessment than conventional deterministic verification and may support decisions on continued use, maintenance or strengthening, with significant economic benefits for bridge owners.
