Abstract

An innovative joint, constructed to allow steel columns to be easily removed and reused from concrete foundations, is proposed, contributing to the design for deconstruction and reuse practices. The connection assembly primarily consists of anchor couplers and anchors embedded in a concrete foundation, and a demountable upper part of the anchors, complemented by a base plate as well as bolts, flange and web cleats. Experimental tests and finite element modelling were employed to evaluate the joint performance. Advanced numerical models of the proposed joint were developed, validated against experimental data, and incorporated into numerical models of steel frames. Large-scale numerical models of frames were used to evaluate the structural performance and efficiency of the proposed joint. The study assessed the rotational stiffness and moment-rotation response of the proposed joint across different frame dimensions. The analysed joint was classified in compliance with the provisions specified in the standard EN 1993-1-8.
